Isaiah 43:1

“But now, this is what the LORD says, He who is your Creator, Jacob, And He who formed you, Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!”

A study in the Hebrew meaning of the word “Redeemed”

“For I have redeemed you…”

Pastor Brad writes:

“Reading from Isaiah 43 this morning, and thought to post the following insight on v.1cd: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!"

That is surely one of the sublimest verses in all of Scripture, and it stunningly declares who the Triune God is. One of my favorite Old Testament commentators, Alec Motyer, gives this insight from this verse, explaining,

"[T]the Hebrew idea of 'redeem' is to make the needs of one's helpless relative his own.

"Moreover, in a crowning intimacy, there is naming; to call someone’s name is a direct personal relationship involving having a specific plan and place for the one named."
