Again, no one in Holy Scripture has ever been called a man or woman after God’s own heart – except David. Of all the figures from the Old Testament (OT), David is mentioned the most), and the OT devotes a whopping 66 chapters to this remarkable man God, whose name means “beloved.” In fact, no one in the Word of God is mentioned more than David – by some accounts, more than 1,100 times. Moreover, David wrote more than half of the 150 psalms (73), and likely more since there are many anonymous psalms.
Humanly speaking, David “founded” praise and worship – so integral to our faith. David was the fierce protector of God’s people, Israel; he was arguably their greatest shepherd, warrior/general, and psalmist -- and no one in the OT described God’s nature better than Him – nor did anyone express a deeper, more profound relationship with the LORD.
I also know of no one in the Bible who repented of sin more than David, who almost without fail refused to tolerate sin in his life; he refused to make excuses for his sins. He was – in some ways – shocking open and honest with Yahweh about his entire life.
For these reasons alone, we ought to carefully examine his life, particularly from the Psalms. The reason the Psalms have always been so loved is because David and the other psalmists wrote out of danger, extreme difficulty, and many tests and trials that were too much for them. But they also teach by example how the people of God can overcome hardship.
