The Work - and Reward - of Character
Pastor Brad Abley: Biblical Educator
Proverbs 18: 2
"A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own mind."
“Our culture is always on my mind. As I grieve over its rapid decline, I hold out hope for reformation in key ways that will impact society. One of those areas of our culture is with its character.
What led me to think of this and write about it came from reading Proverbs 18:2 a few minutes ago: "A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own mind."
Note the words "delight in understanding." That's the hard but rewarding work of character, which requires listening, learning, and humility. Instead, people are foolishly in love with their own, often ill-informed opinions. They prefer to talk, rather than to listen. They're in love with the sound of their own voice.
On the other hand, listening, learning, and humility are life-giving. They result in respect from others, and healthy relationships (especially marriages). Those are three matters in sharp decline, resulting in faultfinders, crybabies, snowflakes, and excuse-makers -- and the entire nation pays the price for fools.
And despite outward appearances and all the talk, these people are miserable. What a tragedy to go through life that way; what a wasted life. The only way to get the reward of character back is for leaders to demand their emphasis, across the board and in every sector of society.”
